Where to get treasures that you can make stylish

Don't have just the right upcycle elements hanging around your basement? Check out local flea markets, second-hand shops, consignment stores or these five places for some fab finds.

-Habitat for Humanity Calgary ( habitat.ca)has three ReStore locations that sell new or gently used furnishings, appliances and even kitchen cabinets at discounted prices. Fundraising and

events manager Sandi Ferchau says the stores are great places for people to pick up inexpensive items to re-upholster, refinish or repurpose.

"If you're really crafty and handy that way, the sky's the limit," she says.

-The Women in Need Society of Calgary (womeninneed. net) operates four retail locations that sell donated household goods from vases and lamps to mirrors and frames. The Dover location carries a great selection of furniture.

"There are so many items that you could update," says community relations manager Cindy Storozinski.

-Tim's Reusables ( timsreusables.com)buys and sells used materials for renovating the home, from cabinets and plumbing pictures to windows and doors.

-Traders of the Lost Art ( traderstoo.com)specializes in architectural antiques, mainly from Europe. The store carries doors, stained glass windows, tubs, sinks and hardware, as well as more specialty items such as stone statuary and ceiling canopies.

-Uniquities ( uniquities.ca)also stocks architectural antiques and salvage (think flooring, stone and chimney pots).
