Sun Court 2004 - 2006

Completed August 2006

On August 16, 2007 the final fourteen families were welcomed into their new homes by sponsors and volunteers at a complex-wide dedication celebration.  The largest Habitat for Humanity project in western Canada, Sun Court took approximately two years for Habitat volunteers to complete.

Now owners of safe, decent, affordable housing, these 27 families (63 children and 36 adults) are home, building bright futures full of possibility.

History

The 27-unit townhouse complex in the community of Dover was started in 2004 and the ambitious undertaking spanned two years and required approximately 168,000 volunteer hours to complete.

Sun Court is a new, environmentally conscious multi-family model for future Habitat Calgary projects.

Designed by Poon McKenzie Architects to be socially and environmentally sustainable, the complex includes features like energy efficient windows that allow homeowners to maximize sunshine and reduce heating costs; an inclusive building layout that promotes connection with neighbours; common green space for gatherings; and strategic landscaping aimed at reducing cooling costs.

"When Habitat Calgary explained their goal for Sun Court, our staff quickly jumped on board and offered
to help.

Since the complex would be managed by a board made up of homeowners, we thought it was imperative to include design elements like semi-private yards with low fencing, common sidewalks
and child play areas that encourage interaction between neighbours while still giving each family
their own space.

Our staff completed the design on their own time and found it very rewarding to share their time and talent with habitat Calgary."
