This is but a small sampling of the events that are held each year in support of affordable home ownership for families in need.
We are overwhelmed by the thoughtful ways in which ordinary people take on the challenge of making clean, decent, affordable homes a possibility for everyone in our city.
Our thanks to all those in our community who have applied their creativity to support our partner families as they work toward homeownership.
We admire your ingenuity and determination to make a difference and proudly share the stories of your success with other Calgarians looking for a way to help.

Held between June 17 and July 18, College Pro Painters invited Calgarians to submit exterior photos of their home, along with a written explanation as to why they thought they deserved to have their home painted for free. Guy Weadick Elementary School
As participants in the Entrepreneurial Achievement program, 5th Grade students at Guy Weadick School focused the results of their efforts on Habitat for Humanity Calgary.
The Entrepreneurial Achievement program, sponsored by Bank of Montreal Group of Companies and The Learning Partnership, enables elementary school to design, launch, and operate entrepreneurial class ventures in collaboration with business partners and others. Students develop confidence in their own capabilities and develop an appreciation for the risks and rewards of turning their creative ideas into reality.
Their first venture focused on creating and selling Job Coupons which represented such chores as snow shovelling and dog walking.
For their second idea, the students engaged their entire school, creating a sales contest around a custom-made, blue gel bracelet printed with 'Habitat for Humanity.'
The bracelets were sold for $2 each. The student who achieved the highest bracelet sales was awarded Calgary Flames Hockey tickets, presented by business partner David Sprague.
Hammer Equipment Rodeo
Instead of roping calves or riding bulls, this rodeo involved operating a Case Loader/Backhoe to victory in an event that pitted Calgary’s most talented heavy equipment operators against each other in a series of three skill testing events.
Local winners were eligible to earn cash prizes up to $500 plus a trip to Las Vegas in 2008 to compete in the Case North American Championship Event for a grand prize Case Loader/Backhoe valued at nearly $120,0000. More than 5,000 operators competed in rodeos across North America, including 100 at our local event.
Hammer made a $1,000 contribution to Habitat Calgary to encourage attendees from the construction industry to participate in volunteer efforts for the organization.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Hammer Equipment," said Sandi Ferchau of Habitat Calgary. "This event is one that we know will bring new faces to join our mission. Through local community partnerships, we together, can respond to an important need for affordable housing for low-income families. The job’s not done yet which means donors, sponsor and volunteers will all come together to build houses with qualified families. Our focus is to provide children with stable and secure homes in which they can grow and thrive, helping families on the path to long-term success and security”.
Hammer Equipment is one of the largest equipment distributors in North America. We are an industrial and construction dealer which represents the best brands in the industry. Each sector has its specific function to help meet the changing needs of ours customers. Read more about our legacy of providing the best products and solutions in the industry www.hammereq.com

People climbing mountains to put Calgarians in homes
Gerry Fairfax & Nancy Prior
As active athletes and committed Habitat advocates, Gerry & Nancy chose to combine their passions as they undertook the challenge to summit the world's highest free standing mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. Together, they organized sponsorship to support their climb and fundraised over $2,100 to build homes for Calgary families.

Larry successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. He used this challenge to collect pledges for Habitat for Humanity Calgary.
Simon Batcup
Simon joined his good friend Mike Fitzpatrick and seven others who decided to celebrate Alberta's 2005 Centenary by climbing Mt. Columbia while raising money for Habitat Calgary in the process. It took two years, but Simon's team was the first to reach the summit in 2006!
Jayman MasterBuilt joined Simon as the climb's major sponsor with a contribution of $7,500 to Habitat in honor of the event. The $9,415 raised went directly to building homes for low-income families.

"Well, we summited Columbia on Friday at 10 a.m. We set out at 3:45 a.m. on a warm Friday morning. We were off the mountain at 3:30 p.m., not until we had encountered a class 1 avalanche!"
Are you interested in joining Simon on his next climb?
Simon is busy making plans to arrange the 2nd Annual Habitat for Humanity Calgary Climb. Simon still has room for a few others to join him on the challenge. For more details, please contact Sandi Ferchau at (403) 253-9331 ext 229.

Both applicants received approximately $240,000 - the largest single gift to Habitat Calgary since its inception in 1988 and a boon for the newly-established Land Trust. Renfrew Educational Services, who holds an on-going contract with Willow Park to manage and execute the auctions, received approximately $200,000 as well.
